The Predator 2018 Film Review
The Predator was a hugely anticipated film from Shane Black the man who originally helped pen the original iconic film and also starred briefly before his grisly demise.
The film industry desperately it seems wants to return to the glory days of these films and the loyal following that exists are eagerly willing to participate, unfortunately what we get is a style over substance film which is what we seem to get all the time nowadays. People for years were shouting out that the ultra violence is missing which is part of the recipe of the older films success.
The problem I had with this film from the outset is the comedy element they put in. The extra things that seem to be filler in a film to take away any real story line.
The threat of the predator of the original came from a simple premise. The toughest most bad ass soldiers met one creature that was better than them in every way. It was scary and gritty and you felt alone and the suspense of not seeing it for so long was what kept the audience interested. This can still work. why not do it. If I was going to do a predator remake it would involve the most toughest actors/characters I could find. A remote training place for these characters and they are hunted one by one just like the original. The only reason they have to bring in two or three or four more predators is they can not make a story involving just one like they originally did.
Having the soldiers hold up somewhere would work. I like the idea of taking elements from the following films. The Thing 1982 the isolation of a wintry base.
The relentless attacks from the wolves in Dog Soldiers and In the night of the walking dead and its sequels are recipes for success. The ultra violence of Robocop and Terminator are realistic and scary unlike the CGI that is relied on. I do like the Director S. Craig Zahler and commend his slightly over the top elements of gore and the way it real makes you squirm that CGI just does not do.
Take the elements of these films put them in a pot a stir and you will get a class film. I would like to see Mr Zahler take over the franchise I believe he would do a great job.
The film was OK until we got the huge predator, then it was too ridiculous for me and so was the dogs. The thumbs up was also a silly point. I did not like the loony soldiers as they didn't really do anything and there was no real character development. I wanted to love it but I just couldn't. Id prefer a lower budget longer more terrifying gritty version of the Predator. This is a style that just seems lost from films these days.
